You may wonder, why have I written this?
Not long ago, daughter number one decided she wanted to study abroad, so at the age of fifteen she packed her bags and set off across the oceans and continents. This website is one way for me to finish telling her all the stuff that I hadn’t quite passed along before she left.
Of course, a good whack of it comes straight from my own father.
With luck, you may find some of it amusing or worthwhile enough to borrow, perhaps even to share with your own tribe. Goodness knows I could’ve put a lot of this to use when I was just starting out in the world.
Meanwhile, ‘Winston’ is a pen name I’ve felt obliged to take, given that my professional livelihood comes from understanding how people — particularly senior politicians, public servants and businessmen — behave when they think no one’s looking.
Naturally, I don’t want to spoil things by giving myself away.
